How Men Over 40 Can Support Healthy Testosterone Naturally

By · August 25, 2026 · 5 min read

After 40, many men start to think more about their energy, strength, mood, and general health. Testosterone can be part of that picture. Levels may change with age, but lifestyle can also play a role in how well you feel day to day.

The good news is that you do not need extreme plans or odd routines. A few steady habits may help support healthy testosterone levels, as well as your overall health.

Lift some weights

Strength training is a great place to start. It helps build and keep muscle, which becomes more important as you get older.

You do not need to train like a bodybuilder. Two or three sessions a week can be enough for many men. Focus on simple moves such as squats, press-ups, rows, lunges, and deadlifts. If you are new to it, start light. Good form matters more than heavy weights.

A personal trainer can help if you are unsure where to begin. You can also use machines at the gym, as they are often easier to learn.

Keep moving each day

Exercise is not only about gym sessions. Daily movement matters too.

Walking, cycling, swimming, gardening, or taking the stairs can all help. Try to avoid sitting for very long periods. If you work at a desk, stand up often and move around for a few minutes.

A brisk walk after lunch or dinner is simple, free, and easy to stick with.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is often overlooked. Yet it can affect mood, hunger, energy, and how well your body recovers.

Most adults need around seven to nine hours a night. Try to keep a regular bedtime and wake-up time. Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Put your phone away before bed if you can.

If you snore badly, wake up gasping, or feel tired even after a full night in bed, it may be worth speaking to your GP. Poor sleep can have many causes.

Eat proper meals

You do not need a perfect diet. But your body does need enough good food.

Aim for meals with protein, fibre, and healthy fats. Good protein choices include eggs, fish, chicken, lean meat, yoghurt, beans, and lentils. Add plenty of vegetables and some wholegrains, such as oats, brown rice, or wholemeal bread.

Healthy fats are also useful in a balanced diet. You can get these from olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, and oily fish.

Try not to crash diet. Very low-calorie diets can leave you tired and hard to live with. A steady, balanced approach is usually better.

Watch your waistline

Carrying too much body fat, especially around the middle, can affect health in many ways. It may also be linked with lower testosterone levels in some men.

You do not need to chase a perfect body. Small changes can make a difference over time. Eat a bit less of the foods you tend to overdo. Move more. Build muscle. Sleep better.

Slow progress is still progress.

Manage stress

Stress is part of life. But constant stress can wear you down.

Look for simple ways to switch off. Go for a walk. Talk to a mate. Spend time outside. Try breathing exercises. Do something you enjoy that is not work, screens, or chores.

You may not be able to remove stress fully. But you can give your body more chances to recover from it.

Go easy on alcohol

A few drinks now and then may not be a big issue for many men. But heavy drinking can affect sleep, weight, mood, and general health.

If you drink, try to keep it sensible. Have alcohol-free days each week. Drink water between drinks. Avoid using alcohol as your main way to relax.

Get some sunlight

Vitamin D is important for general health. Your body can make it when your skin gets sunlight. In the UK, this can be harder in autumn and winter.

Try to spend some time outdoors when you can. During darker months, some people consider a vitamin D supplement. It is best to follow NHS guidance or ask a pharmacist or GP if you are unsure.

Do not ignore symptoms

Feeling tired now and then is normal. But if you have ongoing low mood, low sex drive, loss of strength, erection problems, or extreme tiredness, speak to your GP.

Do not guess or buy random “testosterone boosters” online. Some products make big promises and may not be safe or useful.

Keep it simple

Supporting healthy testosterone naturally is not about one magic trick. It is about your whole lifestyle.

Lift weights. Walk more. Sleep well. Eat decent food. Keep stress in check. Go easy on alcohol. Stay consistent.

You do not have to be perfect. Just start with one habit, then build from there. Small steps, done often, can help you feel stronger, healthier, and more in control after 40.
